Chargers Extend Win Streak to 6 With Sweeps of Joliet, Sauk Valley

The Carl Sandburg College baseball team erupted for 10 homers and 67 runs in four games over the weekend as the Chargers picked up a sweep of Joliet on Friday and added an Arrowhead Conference sweep of Sauk Valley on Saturday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

The victories give Sandburg (10-15, 4-2) six straight wins and eight victories in their last 10 contests.

FRIDAY

Key Moment
The Chargers broke loose for 11 runs in the second inning, with 10 of them coming with two out. Abe Collins (Morton, Ill./Morton) capped the frame with a grand slam to center field.

Sandburg Standout
Center fielder Ben Higgins (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) reached in all four of his plate appearances, going 2 for 2 with a double, triple, two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Key Moment
Tied at 9 in the sixth, Sandburg came up with a six-run inning to finish off the sweep. Cam Scott (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) led off the inning with a single to left and scored two batters later when Darst doubled to center to bring home the go-ahead run.

Sandburg Standout
Darst finished 3 for 3 with a double, homer, three runs scored and three RBIs. His leadoff dinger in the fourth was one of three in the inning by the Chargers as they erased a plated five runs to erase a 7-3 deficit.

Key Moment
Sandburg homered four times in the first three innings as it raced to an 18-0 lead. The Chargers got two blasts from Ashton Johnson (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) — including a third-inning grand slam — and one each from Austin Collinson (Normal, Ill./West) and Higgins.

Sandburg Standout
Collinson had a four-hit game and knocked in seven runs out of the No. 9 spot in the batting order. He hit a three-run homer in the first, singled in the second, doubled in the third and added another three-run bomb in the fourth.

Already ahead 3-0 in the second, Cam Scott extended the Chargers’ lead to 5-0 with a two-run double to left that plated Collins and Higgins.

The Chargers again got damage from the No. 9 spot in the order as Isaac Riegler (McLean, Ill./Oympia) went 3 for 4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs.
